Leonas SAULIS

Leonas SAULIS was born in the Ignalina district, Naujasis Daugeliskis village, on March 12, 1941. In 1957 he finished the Naujasis Daugeliskis secondary school. In 1963 he graduated with honours from the Vilnius University, faculty of mathematics. In 1970 he defended a thesis to acquire a candidate's (PhD) degree of physics and mathematics at the VU Scientific Council. In 1986 he defended the thesis "Approximation by the normal law taking account of large deviations" for a doctor's habilius degree. In 1992 a professor's title was conferred on him.

Using the cumulate method he has proved general lemmas in the space Rk by the normal law of approximation. He has obtained asymptotic expansions in the areas of large deviations for the distribution and its density of sums of independent random variables.
