Mifodijus Sapagovas is a habil. doctor of mathematical sciences, professor, corresponding member of
the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, head of the Numerical Analysis Department.
Since January 1995 he is a director of Institute of Mathematics and informatics.
He was born in 1939. In 1956 he finished the Tumas-Vaizgantas secondary school in Rokiskis, in
1961 graduated from the Faculty of physics and mathematics of Vilnius university, acquiring the
speciality of a mathematician. He started his labor career as a junior research associate at the Institute
of physics and mathematics of the Lithuanian Academy of sciences. From 1962 to 1964 he was a
postgraduate student at the Institute of cybernetics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kiev, in
1965 he was the first to defend the thesis for a doctor's degree in the field of computational
mathematics.
For twelve years (1967 - 1978) he has headed one of the largest Computing center's of the Republic
at the Institute of physics and mathematics. Since 1985 he was a deputy director of the Institute of
mathematics and informatics, since 1967 head of the Numerical analysis department of the same
institute.
In 1986 he defended the doctor's habilius dissertation in the area of the methods for solving
non-linear differential equations. In 1989 he was conferred the title of a professor. From 1965 to
1991 he was delivering lectures at the Vilnius university. He has written with B.Kvedaras a manual
for higher school "Numerical methods" (1974).
The key trend of his research is methods for solving non-linear differential equations and
mathematical modelling (application of mathematical methods in physics, mechanics and
engineering). He has published over 100 scientific papers on these problems.
For almost three decades he has been a member of the board of the Lithuanian Mathematicians' society, since 1987 he
is taking an active part in the work of IMACS, he made reports at the congresses and conference in
Vilnius, edited the proceedings of the conference. Doctors of sciences prepared under his supervision
are working at the Institute of mathematics and informatics, Vilnius university, Vilnius Technical
university.
