The trends of research are the following: development of asymptotically efficient methods for
time series statistical analysis and distribution statistical analysis, and application of
statistical methods in economics, medicine, engineering, geology, and in other areas.
The main theoretical results are obtained in the following fields:
- nonparametric estimation of distribution density and spectral density,
- statistical analysis of the sinusoid-type components of random processes,
- asymptotic analysis of the properties of maximum-likelihood estimators,
- investigation of probabilities of large excursions of empirical processes,
- clusterization of multivariate observations.
Much attention is paid to the development of software for time series analysis, classification,
and statistical analysis of distributions.
In the field of application of statistical methods, priority has been given to the applications
in medicine, biology, and especially economics. The latter are carried out in close collaboration
with the Statistics Lithuania and Economic rearch centrum of Lithuania Bank.
Close contacts have been established with the CEMI (Central Economico-Mathematical Institute) of
Moscow and Uppsala University (Sweden). In the field of teaching the department collaborates with
the Vytautas Magnus University, Vilnius Technical University, Kaunas University of Technology.
The Sector for Research Scientifics Information is created as a separate group of the Applied Statistics Department.
